Insulated Booms for Bucket Trucks

We manufacture insulated fiberglass booms and jibs for bucket trucks. Each filament wound boom is built to the requirements of the specific aerial device it will be mounted on, so the boom fits the truck it goes on. If you are building a new unit, our team can work from your specifications or help you identify the right boom for the job.

What Is an Insulated Bucket Truck?

A bucket truck, also called a cherry picker or boom lift truck, is a truck-mounted aerial device that lifts a worker in a bucket to the job. An insulated bucket truck adds fiberglass sections to the boom so the unit can provide contact protection and secondary insulation when work happens near energized lines.

Fiberglass does not conduct electricity, so it acts as the insulating barrier between the bucket and the truck. That is why insulating booms matters to any crew working near energized lines.

Benefits of Adding Waco Boom's Insulated Booms To Your Bucket Trucks

An insulated boom changes where a bucket truck can safely work. These benefits come from the boom itself.

Enhanced
Safety

Fiberglass interrupts the path current would take from the bucket to the truck, which lowers the risk of electrical injury.

Standards-Based Design

Our booms are designed and tested to ANSI A92.2 requirements for insulated aerial devices.

Tested Before Shipping

Operators can focus on tasks without compromising safety.

Insulated Booms for Articulating and Telescopic Bucket Trucks

The boom style on a bucket truck determines how the crew reaches the work, and we build for both.

Insulated Booms for Articulated Bucket Trucks

Our insulated booms for articulating bucket trucks use hinged sections that let the operator position the bucket around poles and other obstructions. That flexibility suits utility crews on distribution lines and arborists working into tree canopies, where the bucket often has to come in from the side instead of straight up.

Insulated Booms for Telescopic Bucket Trucks

Telescopic booms extend in nested sections, which gives the bucket the vertical reach for tall poles and structures. Our telescopic insulated booms for bucket trucks are built to the length and load requirements of each lift. Utility crews use that reach on taller distribution structures, and construction crews use it for lighting and signage work.

Bucket Truck Applications by Industry

Electric utility crews depend on insulated bucket trucks every day. Linemen on electric distribution circuits rely on the boom as the insulating link between the bucket and the truck. Utility lines also run through trees, so arborists doing tree care and right-of-way work often work from insulated units. Crews that work on both kinds of lines should also know that transmission and distribution booms have different requirements.

Construction crews use insulated bucket trucks for lighting, signage, and facility maintenance near live lines, and they are one of the many industries we serve.

Design Your Own Boom Online

Sourcing an insulated boom for a bucket truck often comes with specific dimensional requirements. Our request a quote form includes an optional boom design module where you can submit your exact measurements upfront, giving our team what they need to get you an accurate custom quote faster.

Design Your Boom

Trusted by Truck Manufacturers and Utility Fleets

We supply insulated booms to the industry's top lift manufacturers, and those manufacturers build our booms into the trucks that utility fleets and tree care companies run near energized lines every day. We also work with engineers and retrofitters around the world who need a boom specified to their equipment. That reputation comes from building one kind of product and building it the same way every time. We build our booms by filament winding rather than pultrusion, which is where the strength and consistency our customers count on come from.

Tens of thousands of booms over three decades demonstrate Waco Boom's track record that lift manufacturers and users regularly depend on.

Reliability

Waco Boom manufactures with a specific focus on insulating booms for the aerial work industry and has been held as the industry standard for nearly 30 years. Since 1998, our engineering staff has maintained a presence helping inform and understand industry standards for domestic and international applications.

Waco Boom uses a filament winding process and unique molding techniques, unmatched by any other process. This ensures the highest resin-to-fiber ratio and heightened consistency, which translates to better stiffness and durability, prevention of air and moisture gaps, lighter weight, and superior aesthetics. When designing to customers’ needs for safety of life and property, choose the boom that is backed by the best quality, expertise, and service.

Innovation

All progress and development at Waco Boom reflect back to manufacturing the best filament wound booms. The quality assurance program is built on the premise of continual improvement. This improvement is pursued in production efficiencies, new tooling and part designs, enhanced quality checks, and engineering research.

Waco Boom performs onsite destructive break testing and dielectric tests. This focus and attention are unparalleled and new challenges are welcome to help drive a safer, lighter, stronger, and unique product for the aerial lift industry.

Boom Availability

Based on performance requirements, Waco Boom can help recommend and develop the proper boom for your application. Tooling can be machined to create a unique, proprietary component for your design. In addition, on the back, you will find a chart with readily available common boom sizes.

FAQs

Insulated booms need a dielectric test at least once every 12 months under ANSI A92.2. They also need one after repairs to the insulated sections and after any contact with an energized line. A boom that has not been tested within 12 months cannot be considered insulated. Every boom we build is dielectric tested before it ships as part of our quality assurance and testing process.

Common causes include dirt or moisture on the boom, sun exposure, surface damage, and contamination inside the boom. Cleaning and drying the boom and then testing it again is usually the first step, and routine boom maintenance helps prevent the problem in the first place. If a boom keeps failing after cleaning, contact our team so we can help find the cause.

It depends on where the damage is and how extensive it is. Minor surface damage to the gel coat can often be repaired, while major damage should be reported to the manufacturer for review before anyone attempts a repair. Any repair to an insulated section should be followed by a dielectric test. If your boom is damaged, contact the lift manufacturer with photos and measurements.
