Insulated Booms for Electricity Distribution

Insulated Booms for Utilities Distribution

Utility companies tirelessly work to combine the consumer needs for uninterrupted electricity distribution with the linemen’s need to work effectively and safely. To accomplish all of this, utility companies rely on proper equipment such as an insulated fiberglass boom.  Waco Boom manufactures fiberglass booms for the safest and most dependable insulated fiberglass booms.

What is an Insulated Boom?

An insulated boom is a boom made from fiberglass – the key material for all Waco Boom’s products – rather than steel. Its purpose is to provide a second level of protection in the event an operator encounters live powerlines. Distribution lines carry approximately 13,000 volts. Having insulated booms for Utilities Distribution is important because the insulated boom acts as a barrier to help prevent electrocution as the powerline is hot and the machine is grounded.

Waco Boom manufactures Class C insulated booms that are the key feature in insulated booms for electricity distribution. Insulated booms provide the structure and insulation necessary to mitigate the always-present risk of live line work.

Solutions for Insulated Booms in Electricity Distribution

    Safety

Insulated booms are crucial to the electricity distribution industry. Power linemen is one of the most dangerous jobs in America as these workers work through snow, rain, and wind to restore power to communities that are without. Safely handling live wires is no small task. Working in bucket trucks with an insulated boom allows the operator to navigate around obstacles like tree branches while the Class C insulated boom – made of fiberglass – ensures the operator isn’t grounded while touching live powerlines.

Aerial insulated booms manufactured at Waco Boom for electricity distribution applications are designed and tested for a minimum Category C rating per ANSI A92.2. These booms provide necessary, secondary insulation for voltages up to 46 kV, and every Class C insulated boom is tested using 100 kV to ensure dielectric integrity. Rigorous testing and quality assurance make Waco Boom’s products the safest on the market.

Waco Boom works with customers to develop man lifts on trucks, vans, trailers, rails, and track-mounted units. These aerial work platforms include specially made jibs and upper and lower booms for articulating and telescopic devices. In addition to the dielectric properties, Waco Boom is typically designed to a 7:1 Factor of Safety based on customer usage and load requirements.

    What is Electricity Distribution?

Distribution refers to the powerlines one sees in residential neighborhoods carrying electricity from substations to consumers.

How does Electricity Distribution differ from the Transmission Industry?

Transmission refers to the high voltage, typically carried by the tall steel towers carrying electricity from generating station to several substations, and they are typically used to carry electricity over long distances.

What are Class C Insulated Booms?

Class C or category C is in reference to the design of the machine rather than the boom. All of Waco Boom’s insulated booms are tested using 100kv prior to shipment to ensure they pass dielectric integrity. Our booms can be used for category C if the machine is properly designed.

Class C is defined as an aerial device used for gloving work. It is limited to 46 kV maximum which is a distribution voltage, and rubber gloves are the primary insulating protection. The boom is secondary. It also must have non-conductive covers at the boom tip.

    BOOM MANUFACTURING

Based on performance requirements, Waco Boom can help recommend and develop the proper Class C insulated boom for your application. Tooling can be machined to create a unique, proprietary component for your design.

We work with manufacturers of insulated booms to help them design their lifts to meet their customers' needs. After their lift is designed to meet the height requirements, we work with our customers to design and supply the insulated boom lift sections needed to complete their insulated boom project. Everything Waco Boom makes is built to order based on the customers’ needs.
